First things first,money does not guarantee success in football(ask Real Madrid).Having said that,exceptions are always there(ask Chelsea!).
The arrival 'f a diminutive Selaco in Robinho,no less,signalled the beginning of something to really look out for.This happened at the start of last season and it seemed money was the chief bargainer here.Or was it?
10th is all Manchester City could manage at the end of the season and this after signing more than a few big names(in monetary terms ie!) while at it.Money is no more a problem at the Eastlands with the guzzling Arabs having taken over,like the other super-rich fellas before(Roman anyone?).What the problem seems is the way they are going about things.Chelsea achieved success ensuring they have a solid 'spine' to the team,this meant a rock-solid defence,a brooding goal keeper,mean holding mid-fielders et'al.City,on the other hand,plan to start with 11(+7) strikers come the start of the 09-10 season.They already have 14 mind you!!
Robinho,Bellamy,Bojinov,Benjani,Vassel were already on the books.What makes them sign Tevez,SantaCruz,Adebayor,quality players no doubt,without offloading the non-performing incumbents,baffles me to my wits!Players like Elano and Barry will also add to the attacking flair of the side but whether they have any defensive cover to face the likes of the Rooney's,the Torres's,the Drogba's and the VanPersie's of this world,remains to be seen.I dare to think otherwise.If last season was an indication,the Citizens have surely not learnt there lessons well.Mark Hughes has a good footballing acumen but it's the money-rich environs which seems to have taken over his otherwise meager way of managing things.
As a neutral, I'd want them to get real and buy(as if that was a problem!) good,what-if old,defenders to make a serious dent in the top-4.If not,watching them play sure will be fun 'cause a rout would always be around the corner(for and against!).And yeah if not,they can also go for a record of sorts by actually starting with 11(+7)forwards!!
